Choose to speak life

Digesting this week's "big 3"

1. Big Scripture

2. Big Idea

In Genesis one, God spoke the world into existence in a series of “let there be” declarations. By His voice all of creation was brought into existence, with the spoken word to produce "fruit of like kind". Jesus declared that if His disciples would have faith in God, they could tell a mountain to be lifted up and thrown into the sea. In this context, Jesus teaches his followers about the power of their words. By this teaching, we learn that it is with words that even a mountain can be commanded to move. The impossible can be accomplished by the words that we speak. Our words have power to create and our words have power to destroy. God has given us all authority, not only to move mountains, but also to speak life into our own lives and the lives of those around us. Speaking life involves and often requires speaking positively, prophetically, with appreciation, encouragement, forgiveness, blessing, and truth.

3. Big Questions

What fruit will you choose to produce, beginning right now?

Questions to Consider:

  1. What would look different, feel different, or be different if you spoke life?
  2. Not every day is a good day. In what ways can you make sure you are building others up even on a bad day?
  3. Take a moment to consider the type of words Christ spoke. How would you describe the motives of His words? What power did they have and what fruit did they bring about?
  4. What steps do you go through to speak truth in love? How do you know if you have acted in love?
  5. Out of the practical ways to speak life, which one(s) do you struggle with most and why do you think that is?
